Young Giraffe Killed in front of Children and Fed to other Animals
A zoo in Denmark invited visitors including children to witness how they put a 18 months old giraffe down and fed to lions and tigers!
The reason is that the Marius, the killed giraffe, had to similar genes to other breeding giraffes and to prevent inbreeding, argued the zoo.
Marius, a healthy young male giraffe, was put down on Sunday, despite of offers from various other zoos, including a wildlife park in Yorkshire, who offered to give the giraffe a new home. The zoo had offers up to Euros 500,000 and turned it down.
According to the zoo none of the 6,000 visitors complaint about their decision. Hard to believe since the zoo has received a petitions with more than 20,000 signatures before they killed the giraffe!
However, the public feeding of Marius to the lions was very popular, at least in the numbers of the visitors.
Stenbaek Bro from the Copenhagen Zoo said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press:
It allowed parents to decide whether their children should watch what the zoo regards as an important display of scientific knowledge about animals.
“I’m actually proud because I think we have given children a huge understanding of the anatomy of a giraffe that they wouldn’t have had from watching a giraffe in a photo!”
He said the zoo, which now has seven giraffes left, followed the recommendation of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria to put down Marius by because there already were a lot of giraffes with similar genes in the organization’s breeding program.
